About the course

This Majorstua Pinhole camera course is a three to five hour photography course where the participants are invited to build their own custom pinhole cameras and take pictures with them. Both the cameras and the course itself was developed with Lena Vida in collaboration with Fotogalleriet, Oslo. The project won support from Sparebankstiftelsen DNB in March 2022.

Aim of creating the course

The aim behind designing this course was to create a tactile and social course for the post-pandemic era and to provide it for free for young people, young adults and adults who have special interest for camera-based art and who might not be able to attend a similar course due to finanicial or other reasons.

Majorstua PIN 3120 Paper Edition. Designed by Lena Vida for the "Build Your Own Pinhole Camera" which took place at Fotogalleriet, Oslo and which also won support from Sparebankstiftelsen DNB to be further continued in the fall of 2022.

The Story Behind The Course

"I started to think about photography differently, after I took one of Stig Marlon Weston's cameraless photography courses in 2018. My horizon widened, and for weeks to come, I could not think about anything else, but photographic experiments. Shortly after this, I joined the Student’s Photography Club (Studentenes Fotoklubb) at Chateau Neuf, Oslo. Since I did not have a camera that time, I started to design cameras. Each new semester, when the potential new members visited to the club, there were people who did not have cameras and were therefore shy to join us. Inspired by this, I created the first more complicated Majorstua pin camera from black paper and an accompanying course for the members of the club. Then, we visited different spots around Majorstua (the area of Oslo, where the club was located), took pictures, and developed them in the dark room.

Later, I further developed the camera design at OsloMet Makerspace, where I worked with the cameras and then with other projects between the fall of 2019 and the spring of 2021. I created a Majorstua OsloMet PIN Camera with a matching bag and a film holder for developing the film in the dark room in 2019. Then, I created cameras and a course for large-format film or positive paper. The course was fully booked, and the date was set to be held 12 March 2020, so it got cancelled due to the pandemic, unfortunately. In October 2021, however, when it was safe to hold courses again, I created a new camera for film rolls, and designed a new course which was held at Fotogalleriet for children at the age of 12-16, students, and a group of adults. I also gave a shorter course about pinhole photography for KulTur Tøyen, for. A group of adults learning Norwegian and interested in arts and culture in Norway. This was a fantastic experience, and I am looking forward to holding the full DIY Camera Course for them again in the fall of 2022 with support from Saprebankstiftelsen DNB.”
